Semaine 52: LEONARD COHEN - You Want It Darker (2016)

Comment chroniquer objectivement un disque alors que son auteur vient de mourir ?

Pour Leonard Cohen, je n'ai pas eu à me poser la question, tant je l'aimais et tant ses chansons restent intemporelles, encore aujourd'hui.

J'aime pratiquement tout chez Cohen, sauf ces derniers enregistrements: The Future, à moitié réussi, et la suite, franchement pénible.

Et puis juste avant sa mort, il balance You Want It Darker, un album apaisé où Leonard chante à peine, préférant juste déclamer d'une voix grave des textes toujours sublimes, sur des mélodies tenues, mais aux arrangements sobres, sans les vilains claviers des années 90.

Après plusieurs écoutes, je dois rendre les armes: cet album est beau, extrêmement touchant, même si parfois un peu chiant.

De la chanson éponyme (You Want It Darker, intouchable) à Steer Your Away, en passant par le grave It Seemed the Better Way, tout est juste, et c'est facile le meilleur album de Leonard depuis I'm your Man.

Et maintenant, je peux pleurer sa disparition: 2016 aura été une belle année de merde de coté là.

Semaine 51: LESCOP - Echo (2016)

Je garde un souvenir ému du premier album éponyme de Lescop, avec notamment ce titre, La Forêt, facile meilleur titre new-wave français composé ces dernières années.

Avec Echo, son second album, Lescop évite la redite et c'est tout à son honneur.

Courageux, audacieux, très bien produit, Echo débute avec David Palmer, titre parfait pour faire la liaison avec le premier album.

Puis rapidement, Lescop explore de nouvelles pistes: Mauvaises filles, hyper minimaliste, froid, glaçant. Insomnie lui rappelle la variété underground des années 80, c'est assez dansant.

L est plus guilleret, assez léger. Je ne suis pas sur de comprendre ce texte qui parle de téléphone cellulaire, mais la mélodie est irrésistible.

Quelqu'un à qui penser refait une grande embardée vers la new-wave. Les claviers sont terribles pas loin de Kraftwerk.

Et puis finalement je tombe sur le titre éponyme, Echo, avec sa mélodie qui lentement se déploie, prend son envol, par ricochet. La chanson est géniale, super bien construite, un grand moment.

En deux albums, Lescop a donc confirmé qu'il était l'un des grands talents de la nouvelle scène française, avec La Féline notamment. Un sans faute.

Semaine 50: AGNES OBEL - Citizen of Glass (2016)

2016, une année musicalement marquée par les Femmes, avec plusieurs excellents albums que je continue de chérir aujourd'hui, comme ceux d'Emma Pollock et de Gemma Ray.

Et aujourd'hui, une nouvelle pierre vient s'ajouter à mon édifice avec Citizen of Glass, le troublant troisième album d'Agnes Obel, la petite fée danoise.

Citizen of Glass est un album froid, tendu, divinement arrangé, et totalement fascinant. Un album qui rappelle à bien des égards The Exodus Suite de Gemma Ray ou les œuvres de Stina Nordenstam.

Un album où la Danoise ose tout, comme un duo avec elle même sur Familiar (on a du mal à y croire tant sa seconde voix est méconnaissable), des pistes instrumentales de toute beauté (Red Virgin Soil), et une qualité musicale assumée jusqu'au bout, avec aucun morceau raté.

Agnes Obel continue donc de rassembler autour de sa musique exigeante, c'est rare et follement encourageant. Comme quoi on peut toucher les masses tout en restant intègre et en ne cédant rien. Jain (et son génial Zanaka) et elle l'ont bien compris cette année.

Semaine 49: THE DIVINE COMEDY - In May (2016)

Alors que le dernier album de Divine Comedy se bonifie de jour en jour et trônera facile dans mon Top10 des meilleurs albums de l'année, il m'est impossible d'oublier In May, album offert par Neil Hannon dans sa version CD avec Foreverland.

Car In May est bouleversant, magnifique, une oeuvre puissante et importante et à bien des égards, singulière dans la carrière de Neil.

Alors que Foreverland pétarade et provoque une joie béate, In May montre le coté sombre de Neil. Cet album raconte de façon épistolaire la lente agonie d'un jeune fils victime d'un cancer foudroyant et ses impressions relatées à son père.

Si Neil ne tombe jamais dans le pathos et les larmes faciles, c'est parce qu'il a choisi la sobriété pour illustrer cette histoire, la sobriété et l'épure d'un orchestre de chambre, piano-cordes.

In May est aussi une formidable étude sur les liens entre un père et un fils, sur la musique (Bach est souvent cité) et bien sur sur la mort.

2016 est donc l'année de Neil Hannon. Ce sera lui mon homme de l'année. Sans discussion possible.

Semaine 48: JAGWAR MA - Every Now & Then (2016)

En 2013, les Australiens de Jagwar Ma sortait un disque assez fou, Howlin', qui ressuscitait d'un coup les Stone Roses et les Happy Mondays, l'Hacienda et Madchester. C'était festif, dansant, bref très plaisant.

2016, les Jagwar Ma reviennent avec Every Now & Then, avec la même recette comme le prouve le dingo Say What You Feel qui ouvre l'album.
Le hic, c'est que pour la suite, les Australiens ont mangé l'intégralité de leur stock de pilules et du coup ils semblent trop stone pour pondre une chanson ou une mélodie correcte.

Every Now & Then est donc un empilement de vagues bouts de chansons, sans queue ni tête, sans aucune idée, une sorte de gloubiboulga indigeste et vraiment pénible.
Une sacrée purge, à oublier fissa.

Semaine 47: THE DIVINE COMEDY - Foreverland (2016)

Neil Hannon est mon héros pop absolu.

Si Brian Wilson, Lee Hazlewood et John Barry forment ma Sainte Trinité Pop, Neil lui est mon héros, celui que je suis depuis mon adolescence et qui ne m'a jamais déçu.

Foreverland est son 11eme album, et c'est un excellent crû.

Après le mitigé Bang Goes the Knighthood, Neil Hannon et sa Divine Comedy revient au sommet avec un album baroque, formidablement arrangé (ses cordes, ses cuivres !) et pas une seule chanson faiblarde, que du haut de gamme, se permettant même avec To The Rescue ou Foreverland de tutoyer Mutual Friends (bon, ce titre reste tout de même tout en haut de l'Olympe).

Drôle, touchant, enjoué, mais grave aussi (le très curieux et intrigant Other People, qui finit d'un coup sec, sans prévenir), Foreverland est la nouvelle preuve que Neil Hannon est un compositeur majeur, un génie inimitable, et donc toujours mon héros pop absolu.

La semaine prochaine, je reviendrai sur son second album, In May, offert avec Foreverland. Un disque bouleversant, une autre pierre à chérir dans la discographie de The Divine Comedy.

Semaine 46: GOAT - Requiem (2016)

A l'heure où l'auto-tune et pro-tool règnent en maître sur les productions actuelles, il est assez rafraîchissant et étonnant de pouvoir encore écouter un disque comme ce Requiem des Suédois de Goat. Car à peine lancé le premier titre Djôrôlen / Union of sun and moon, nous voilà projetés dans les années 70, dans une communauté hippie sentant fort le patchouli où les rythmes tribaux et le groove répétitif des Suédois vont nous faire danser jusqu'à tard dans la nuit.

Avec notamment Temple Rythms ou Goatfuzz, on a affaire à des hymnes irrésistibles qui affolent nos guibolles et nous font danser comme des derviches tourneurs, tout ça sans drogue, c'est magnifique !

Dignes héritiers des Amon Düül II, Goat n'a qu'une idée: vous envoyer dans le cosmos avec son acid-folk totalement camé.

Les pisse-vinaigres vous objecteront que ça chante faux et que les flûtes sont dissonantes. Qu'importe, Requiem est un disque festif, simple et jouant sur nos instincts primaires. 

Un disque qui fait un bien fou.

Semaine 45: NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDS - Skeleton Tree (2016)

J'ai toujours été méfiant avec les albums écrits après un deuil. Peur du pathos, du larmoyant et d'un certain voyeurisme.

Mais il faut bien reconnaître que la mort a permis à certains artistes de composer des titres inoubliables, véritable catharsis pour eux et aussi pour nous, tel le bouleversant Twenty One de The Apartments, sorti l'an dernier.

Nick Cave a perdu son jeune fils l'an dernier. Skeleton Tree a été composé peu après, et l'album est poignant de bout en bout, d'une extrême pudeur, avec ses interrogations, ses prières.

Skeleton Tree s'ouvre sur le lugubre Jesus Alone, comme un requiem moderne, glaçant.

Si Rings of Saturn ne fonctionne pas complètement du fait de ses chœurs tombant à plat, Girl in Amber, lui, reprend avec dignité l'hommage que Nick Cave chante à son fils, avec ses fidèles Bad Seeds.

La voix grave de Nick Cave fait merveille, on écoute religieusement, on compatit sans excès, on partage la tristesse de Nick Cave, on associe nos douleurs, nos disparus.

Et lorsque résonne le très beau Distant Sky, en duo avec Else Torp, on a la gorge tellement serrée que l'émotion ne peut que nous submerger. 

Un disque magnifique.
