Semaine 42: CHELSEA WOLFE - Abyss (2015)

En écoutant Abyss, le nouvel album de Chelsea Wolfe, on pense à ses glorieux compagnons, Earth et Swans en tête, deux groupes oppressants mais régulièrement passionnants.

Ici le son est lourd, angoissant, flirtant allègrement avec le metal et le drone. La voix éthérée de Chelsea Wolfe transperce cette coque de plomb pour y ajouter une ambiance glaciale, presque mortuaire. On peine à respirer.

C’est souvent très (trop) sombre, un peu long, mais parfois très réussi comme sur Maw ou sur l’envoûtant Iron Moon qui commence comme chez Sunn o))) pour basculer ensuite vers une Dream Pop à la Still Corners.

Avec déjà presque 7 albums au compteur, la jeune Chelsea Wolfe (31 ans seulement) continue de se forger une belle image de sorcière gothique du folk-metal, un genre où elle est actuellement la seule à exceller, loin des images carnavalesques des autres (Evanescence & co).
